Baptiste Rabichon

Prize winner 2022

Mother's Rooms was born of child's play.

Lying on your bed, tilting your head back, daydreaming as you explore the strange, empty palaces of the ceilings. Past and present telescope. Photographer and child become one. The photograph embodies childhood memory, and the original image becomes both universal and timeless.

The work thus created is both the translation of a subjective, intimate experience, and the expression of a collective truth.

In his previous works, Baptiste Rabichon combines techniques: he glues, insolarizes, spins, manipulates and exhumes old processes - cyanotype photograms, pinhole.

In Mothers' Rooms, on the other hand, he returns to the essence of photography: he offers us neither more nor less than what his eye see. In this series, probably his most intimate work, the use of the large-format view camera returns to the essence f the image: the point of view. Through the simplicity of the point of view, we gain access to pure beauty, to that moment of grace when time seems to lighten, suspend and disappear. Perhaps this is what drives the artistic quest: to reach that magical place within us that escapes time and space, that original place that only childhood memories can recapture, that only the photographic image can embody.
