Laurent Millet

Special mention 2016

“Stemming from the editorial work on polyhedra by Wenzel Jamnitzer, a famous Nuremberg silversmith of the 16th century, these erudite and complex forms are pedestals that the author illustrates here in order to present mathematical forms as sculptures.

These plinths are partly based on the formal vocabulary of mathematical objects and partly on the ornamental spirit of Mannerist forms. They have both the trivial function of supporting an object, the abstract flavor of the most exact science and that of the freest, most useless architecture of their time: the pavilions that began to adorn Renaissance gardens and whose description by Francesco Colonna in his Poliphilo's Dream inspired generations of landscapers and architects.

Given their complexity, these plinths are also obvious issues in terms of representation and fabrication, whether for a 16th-century or 21st-century author”.

Photographer and visual artist Laurent Millet (b. France, 1968) composes the chapters of an imaginary encyclopedia, populated by objects he constructs and photographs in natural settings or in his studio. His assemblages are hybrids of traditional, scientific and architectural objects, as well as works by artists whose work he loves. Each of these constructions is an opportunity to question the status of the image: its history, its place, the physical phenomena associated with it and its modes of appearance.

In 2015, Laurent Millet was awarded the prestigious Prix Niépce for his body of work. In 2014, he was awarded the Prix Nadar for his catalog “Les enfantillages pittoresques” published by Filigrane. Laurent Millet is represented by La Galerie Particulière, Paris-Brussels.
