Des sneakers comme Jay Z

In the checkroom of the Centre de Premier Accueil at Porte de la Chapelle, Paris, one winter evening in 2017, Zaman - a young Afghan who had arrived in Bermuda shorts and flip-flops after walking sixteen months from Kabul - asked me if by any chance, in the pile of used tennis shoes I was showing him, we might have a pair of “not ugly” sneakers... like Jay-Z's. The project took off from there.
Shortly afterwards, two photographers, a videographer and four volunteers from Emmaüs Solidarité came together with a simple mission: to find out more about the role of their clothes, the clothes they wear and which often belonged to others. What they mean to them. How they denounce, how they betray, how they protect (and not just from the cold and rain). They each chose an outfit from the clothes on offer in the checkroom and took the time to explain why. Why these shoes, why this shape of pants, this color of jacket. And then to pose. These portraits, made with a large format camera, as a moment of encounter, and these precious moments of interview, are here to testify.
