ELLIOS#2

ELLIOS  is a photographic study of the sun as a primary source of light, and its alteration phenomena, carried out since 2013 in partnership with LESIA (the sun observation center at Paris-Meudon Observatory).

This reflection starts from the presupposition that what makes things visible (light, in essence, the sun) is not visible.

The ELLIOS#2 series stems from this research.

“For this work, I put myself back in the conditions of the first photographic missions, walking for five days around the same mountain in the Moroccan High Atlas, accompanied by a guide and a mule carrying the camera. By choosing to explore these landscapes, accessible only on foot, I was trying to get closer to the temporality of the sun.

Through this series, I wish to question the paradoxical use of photography, which is often employed to retranscribe what one has seen, whereas photography intrinsically induces a change of dimension (from 3D to 2D).

So, from this exploration, I decided to bring back light captures rather than simple landscape views, thus retranscribing a true experience of the visible. I decided to interrupt the photographic process by showing the image that is not visible, the impact of light. By showing the negative image, I reveal the light as a primitive imprint of the landscape.

Working with a large format camera, I used scales to remove all depth from the landscape. The resulting images, created by the materialization of light through the crystallization of silver halide on the surface of photographic film, reveal fragments of an original, universal rock.”
